Wichita takes big hit

Just when the Wichita Black Lightning were starting to chug along, going 7-3 in their last 10 after starting the season 3-6, they took a major blow.

#1 starter, veteran Jerry King, irritatited a nurve in his elbow while throwing a sinker to the Jacksonville Dolphins' c Tom Harper. Jacksonville and Wichita had just agreed to terms to send the c to the Lightning minutes prior to the game, but the league still needed to approve the deal.

Harper hit the pitch for a single into RF.

"It really hurts us," said GM zhawks after the game," Jerry is a big part of our rotation and losing him is huge."

The Lightning have not had any luck with signing veteran pitchers as King only adds to the list of vet starters the club has acquired, only to see them get hurt. Joe Cohen, Jarrod Collins and Reid Stanton are a few other names that have come to the club, only to get hurt.

"Yes we are going to weigh our options in adding another starting pitcher to bolster the end of our rotation," zhawks continued,"right now we are going to Herman (Runyan) to show us what he's got."

The time table for King's return is 18-20 weeks, possibly making him ready for the playoffs should Wichita qualify. Frank Mlicki has been promoted to the majors to provide relief help.
